Netflix Indicted in Texas over ‘Cuties’ film

The backlash continues over the sexualization of young girls by Netflix in the promotion of the French film “Cuties”.
A grand jury in Tyler County, Texas has indicted the company over the film, charging that they did “knowingly promote visual material which depicts the lewd exhibition of the genitals or pubic area of a clothed or partially clothed child who was younger than 18 years of age at the time the visual material was created, which appeals to the prurient interest in sex, and has no serious, literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.”
The indictment was announced on Twitter by Texas State Rep. Matt Schaefer.

In a statement Tuesday, a Netflix spokesperson said: “‘Cuties’ is a social commentary against the sexualization of young children. This charge is without merit and we stand by the film.”
The network claiming it is just social commentary against the sexualization of children is a hard pill to swallow, as their original promotional materials did not mention it at all.

Critics have panned the film, claiming it exploits and sexualizes children.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is among several Washington lawmakers who have called for a Department of Justice investigation of Netflix over the film.
“The video streaming service and content-producer Netflix is currently hosting a film entitled ‘Cuties’ that sexualizes young girls, including through dance scenes that simulate sexual activities and a scene exposing a minor’s bare breast,” Cruz said in a letter last month to Attorney General Bill Barr.
Multiple petitions were launched against the film, including two on Change.org that generated nearly 90,000 signatures on one, and over 418,000 signatures on the other.
Newsweek also reports that the Netflix cancellation rate was eight times higher than the average daily level on Saturday, September 12, suggesting some viewers may have taken the decision encouraged in the viral hashtag to #CancelNetflix.
