Our Freedom & Liberty Must Be Defended
By Donna Capurso, Patriot Journalist
A gun is like a parachute or a life jacket…the first time you need one and you don’t have one, you may never need one again…ever.
To me, the most important amendment to our Constitution is our Second Amendment,
“RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS. A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.“
Our second amendment is the only amendment that gives “We the People” the ability to defend our liberty, freedoms and the principles that our founding fathers fought and bled for. It’s our elected political representatives as well as “We the People” who need to understand our mutual responsibility to ensure that our constitutional rights are not only protected, but remain intact under any circumstances; to do otherwise is to invite tyranny, oppression and an end to the America I have loved and cherished during my 73 years on this earth.
The liberals in our US Congress and China Joe have launched an all-out assault on our Second Amendment rights. Their logic (or lack thereof) would follow that there should be a ban on all hammers, knives, baseball bats and vehicles because these can be used as weapons of deadly force.
A comparison of mass shootings stopped by 9-1-1 responses vs. mass shootings stopped by citizens indicates that when citizens are able to stop the killing, they prevent 84 percent of the deaths (Politifact). I appreciate Charlton Heston’s credo:
Perhaps a note should be taken from America’s past. The American Revolution for Independence began on April 19th, 1775 with what has been called “the shot heard round the world.” As important as issues such as burdensome taxation, being ruled by King George III with no representation, restrictions on trade, and a lack of trial by jury were, none of these issues were the catalyst for the beginning of America’s War for Independence.
The actual catalyst for the American Revolution started on that fateful date on Lexington Green in Concord, Massachusetts when the British attempted to confiscate Americans’ guns. That was their line in the sand. Those that are trampling on our Constitutional rights in regards to our ability to bear arms have started with rhetoric that sounds good, like “public safety,” “common sense gun laws” or “gun violence must stop.” However, Janet Reno’s gun quote is the most prophetic:
Be advised, no, make that BE AWARE, that as of March 11, 2021, the US House of Representatives approved a measure that expands background checks on individuals who are seeking to purchase or transfer firearms as top “Demoncrats” have vowed to reintroduce gun control measures.
The bill, titled the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021, passed 227-203, receiving 8 Republican votes for it and 1 Dem vote against. 5 Republicans co-sponsored the bill along with several Dems.
According to a summary of the legislation, it will “utilize the current background checks process in the US to ensure individuals prohibited from gun possession are not able to obtain firearms.” Currently, any firearm purchased at a retail store or online has to go through a background check and has to involve a licensed firearms dealer with a federal firearms license, known as an FFL. Specifically, H.R. 8 would also require background checks for private sales.
The House recently passed another control measure, H.R. 1446, which allows for the FBI to indefinitely delay background checks. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have said they would reintroduce other gun control measures. Biden’s administration also expressed support for such measures in recent days.
The bills and proposals come as record numbers of firearms are continuing to be sold in the United States. According to recent figures from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), gun sales in January surged by almost 10 percent month-over-month and about 60 percent as compared with January 2019.
The National Rifle Association, in a 2019 analysis, said that if passed, the bill would require that “loans, gifts, and sales of firearms be processed by a gun store. The same fees, paperwork, and permanent record-keeping apply as to buying a new gun from the store. “If you loan a gun to a friend without going to the gun store, the penalty is the same as for knowingly selling a gun to a convicted violent felon.” Likewise, when the friend returns the gun, another trip to the gun store is necessary, upon pain of felony.
According to this website, https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/117/hr8 , H.R. 8 has an 88% chance of passing when it gets to the US Senate.
We as Patriots need to contact our US Senators and ask them to vote “NO” on this legislation.
With the proposed tactics the federal administration and a number of members of Congress are using to violate their oaths of office in their attempt to usurp our right to bear arms, what will “We the People” do to support and defend our US and our Idaho State Constitutions? Will we stand strong and firm or “go along to get along?” The decisions we will make in the near future will define how history will judge our actions, or lack thereof.
As for “We the People” who believe in our Second Amendment rights and are willing to stand up to protect them…this needs to be our line in the sand.
The men and women, in all branches of our government, need to understand the changes that our society has transitioned into since our country was founded by the men that had the fortitude and moral courage to persevere in the worst of conditions.
The decisions “We the People” will make in the near future will define how history will judge our actions, or lack thereof. If you feel like I do, you have had enough of the intrusion, the control, the abuse and the political rhetoric of the federal government.
It is time to understand that words like liberty, freedom, patriotism, justice, and the rule of law used to be part of our culture and way of life to be proud of and be ready to fight for and now is the time to bring those values and principles back into our lives with a vengeance.
If you understand how important the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the concept of self-governance are, then it will be up to us to be fearless in defending our God given rights.
If you believe in the phrases “one nation under God,” “in God we Trust,” and are proud to say the pledge of allegiance to our flag, then now is the time to let these words penetrate your very heart and soul.
If you sing “God Bless America” or our national anthem “The Star Spangled Banner” with your hand over your heart and tears in your eyes then we need to put those hands to work and make those tears count.
Now is the time to feel empowered to take back what has been stolen right out from under us. What will your choice be…to stand back or stand up?
