Faithful Observations – “Live Not By Lies”
By Bob Shillingstad
“Who controls the past, controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.”
-The Party Slogan, George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four
For nearly two years, this has been a time like none before. We are lied to on a regular basis and here are some of the “whoppers” we have been fed by the elites and the main stream media:
* There was Russian Collusion in the 2016 election.
* Justice Kavanaugh had a past of sexual deviancy (And thus his reputation was besmirched.)
* Recognizing Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel will bring war.
* There was collusion with the Ukraine and resulted in impeachment.
* There are many genders, not just male and female, and the choice is yours.
* The COVID virus is so deadly to young people we must close schools.
* An untested, experimental vaccine must be taken for an illness that affects less than 94% of any age of our population (who don’t have medical complications.)
* The election of 2020 was fair and there was no interference by the Democrats.
* The January 6th protests were an outright insurrection.
Undoubtedly you could add more lies to the list but what is most frustrating is that the truth rarely comes out and when it does, there is no confession that this was not the truth after all. For example, the Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene school districts swallowed the lies about the dangers for young people attending schools and their even spreading the virus to teachers. These were all lies! They had a greater danger of dying in a school bus accident or drowning in the bathtub at home.
The Lakeland School District had school as close to normal at five days a week, masks were voluntary and students were not shortchanged on their education. This was kept quiet in the media because it would expose the lies. Even when the lies get exposed, there is no pain or consequence for that lying! The education system pushes a curriculum that despises the United States and divides us by racial and ethnic groups. Where is the punishment for spreading lies?
There is an excellent book by Rod Dreher entitled “Live Not By Lies“. It came out last year and is recommended reading for every citizen. After the publication of Solzhenitsyn’s “Gulag Archipelago“, which exposed the rottenness of Soviet totalitarianism and made Solzhenitsyn a global hero, Moscow expelled him to the West. On the eve of his forced exile, Solzhenitsyn published a final message to the Russian people titled “Live Not By Lies!” In the essay, he challenged the claim that the totalitarian system was so powerful that the ordinary man and woman cannot change it.
“Nonsense”, he said. “The foundation of totalitarianism is an ideology made of lies. The system depends for its existence on a people’s fear of challenging the lies.” Said the writer, “Our way must be: Never knowingly support lies.” Dreher says that these utopian progressives are constantly changing the standards of thought, speech, and behavior. You can never be sure when those in power will come after you, casting you as a villain for having said or done something that was perfectly fine the day before. And the consequences of violating the new taboos are extreme, including losing your livelihood and having your reputation ruined forever. It is very hard for Americans who have never lived through this kind of ideological fog to recognize what is happening.
Live Not By Lies is an important book that gives the stories of dissidents in totalitarian countries but also tells how to keep your sons and daughters in the faith. Similar books have come out over the last few years including We Will Not Be Silenced by Dr. Erwin Lutzer, who pastored the Moody Church for decades. Dr. Lutzer also wrote an amazing history of Germany prior to WWII entitled “Hitler’s Cross” and that should be in everyone’s library. We are probably all familiar with the story of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a brave pastor who stood up to the Nazi regime taking over the churches. Many are not aware that there were over 800 pastors and priests in Germany that also went to the concentration camps because they would not live by lies.
It is nearly impossible to over emphasize the dangers facing our country, Christianity and the dismantling of the Republic. We need to be informed, organized and ready to communicate the dangers we face. Mark Levin made the statement that “We are not a nation of laws, but of political will.” Our opponents have the political will. Can we stand against it and “live not by lies”?
