Homemade BBQ Sauce Recipes

There is no reason to buy BBQ Sauce when you can make it easily and from scratch with good wholesome ingredients. Making BBQ sauce is not hard, you can learn how quickly and easily.

In general, most BBQ sauces only entail mixing ingredients and letting them sit in the refrigerator for a day or so to allow the flavors to blend. Occasionally, some recipes will call for you to cook the ingredients.

Once you try a few different recipes, you should try making your own sauce with the ingredients that you and your family love best.

Here are a few to get you started:

Basic BBQ

Ingredients:

1 cup ketchup

3⁄4 cup brown sugar, lightly packed

1⁄2 teaspoon white vinegar

1⁄4 cup mustard

1⁄4 teaspoon mustard powder

1⁄4 teaspoon garlic powder

1⁄8 teaspoon chili powder

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a 2-4 cup measuring cup. Mix well.

Easy BBQ Sauce

Ingredients:

1 1/3 Cups Ketchup

3/4 Cup Cider Vinegar

1/2 Cup Loosely Packed Brown Sugar

4 TSP Paprika

2 TSP Ground Cumin

2 TSP Garlic Powder

2 TSP Onion Powder

2 TBSP Dried Minced Onions

2 TSP Kosher Salt

2 TSP Fresh Cracked Black Pepper

2 TBSP Tabasco Chipotle Sauce

Directions:

Combine all of the ingredients in a small sauce pan off the heat. Mix well. Turn your burner to medium heat and bring sauce to a simmer, stirring constantly. Cook for 5-10 minutes and turn off heat. Let sauce sit for 10 minutes while onions rehydrate.

Honey BBQ Sauce

Ingredients:

1 cup ketchup

½ cup honey

¼ cup white vinegar

¼ cup molasses

1 teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring

½ teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon ground black pepper

¼ teaspoon paprika

¼ teaspoon chili powder

¼ teaspoon onion powder

¼ teaspoon garlic powder

¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper

Directions:

Stir ketchup, honey, vinegar, and molasses together in a saucepan over medium heat until smooth; add liquid smoke, salt, black pepper, paprika, chili powder, onion powder, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Stir the seasonings into the ketchup mixture, reduce heat to low, and simmer until thickened, about 20 minutes.

White BBQ Sauce

Ingredients:

1 cup mayonnaise

⅓ cup apple cider vinegar

3 teaspoons water

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

½ teaspoon kosher salt

½ teaspoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon onion powder

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

¼ teaspoon hot sauce

Directions:

Combine mayonnaise, vinegar, water, Worcestershire sauce, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper, and hot sauce in a bowl; mix until thoroughly combined. Refrigerate for up to 3 days

Texas-Style BBQ

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cups beef stock or broth

1/2 cup ketchup

1/2 small onion, finely chopped

2 tablespoons bacon drippings or unsalted butter

Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

Directions:

Combine the beef stock, ketchup, onion, bacon drippings, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/2 to 1 teaspoon pepper in a medium pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium low and simmer until the onion is tender, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside to let the flavors develop, at least 1 hour. Reheat the sauce before serving.

Dr Pepper BBQ Sauce

Ingredients:

1 can (12 ounces) Dr Pepper

1 cup crushed tomatoes

1/4 cup packed brown sugar

2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard

1 tablespoon orange juice

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 garlic clove, minced

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/8 teaspoon pepper

Directions:

In a small saucepan, combine all ingredients; bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, 30-35 minutes or until slightly thickened, stirring occasionally. Refrigerate leftovers.

Whiskey BBQ Sauce

Ingredients:

½ onion, minced

4 cloves garlic, minced

¾ cup bourbon whiskey

½ teaspoon ground black pepper

½ tablespoon salt

2 cups ketchup

¼ cup tomato paste

⅓ cup cider vinegar

2 tablespoons liquid smoke flavoring

¼ cup Worcestershire sauce

½ cup packed brown sugar

⅓ teaspoon hot pepper sauce, or to taste

Directions:

In a large skillet over medium heat, combine the onion, garlic, and whiskey. Simmer for 10 minutes, or until onion is translucent. Mix in the ground black pepper, salt, ketchup, tomato paste, vinegar, liquid smoke, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, and hot pepper sauce.

Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, and simmer for 20 minutes. Run sauce through a strainer if you prefer a smooth sauce. For best results, refrigerate for a day or two, allowing the flavors to blend.

Kansas City BBQ

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons neutral-tasting oil, such as grape seed or vegetable

6 cloves garlic, smashed

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 slightly heaping tablespoon chili powder

1 tablespoon paprika

1 teaspoon crushed red pepper

1/4 teaspoon ground allspice

Pinch ground cloves

2 cups ketchup

2 cups water

1/2 cup cider vinegar

1/4 cup dark molasses

1/4 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar

1 tablespoon kosher salt

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

2 teaspoons English-style dried mustard

1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 bay leaf

Directions:

Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the garlic, tomato paste, chili powder, paprika, red pepper, allspice, and cloves and cook, stirring, until paste is dark brick red, about 3 minutes. Add the ketchup, water, vinegar, molasses, brown sugar, salt, soy sauce, Worcestershire, mustard, black pepper, and bay leaf. Adjust the heat to maintain a gentle simmer and cook until the flavors come together, about 30 minutes. Remove and discard bay leaf before serving.
