A Free People’s Suicide

A Free People’s Suicide

By Bob Shillingstad

“At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up among us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.” -Abraham Lincoln, 1838

One of my favorite authors is Os Guinness who has written more than 30 books that challenge me about freedom, history and our country. His books are a must read for anyone looking for valuable insight into the cultural, political and social contexts in which we all live. With an Oxford doctorate he has the classical education to delve deep into history and trends from an orthodox Christian perspective. Having re-read the book A Free People’s Suicide first published in 2012, it was before the 2016 election, COVID and the attacks on our freedom.

There has been nothing so glaring as the events of the last 18 months and each day seems to be worse than the day before. The passage of the “infrastructure bill” that will spend $3.5 Trillion dollars is the latest of events driving us to complete socialism and suicide of our country. This started out as a $1.5 trillion dollar piece of legislation that required 60 Senators to get around the filibuster but that was allowed with 19 Senators voting for the bill including both of Idaho’s Senators! It was common knowledge that when this legislation went to “reconciliation” with the House of Representatives in committee it would emerge as something totally different and it did. Not only was the price tag more than doubled the details in this 2,700 page bill were truly frightening.

Why did our Senators vote for the initial bill in the first place? A good question, maybe so they could be Mitch McConnell’s good graces and be appointed committee chairman or just to be in good graces with the rest of the swamp. They certainly were not standing up for freedom like Senator Rand Paul or a handful of Senators who have been speaking out.

To add insult to injury Senator Risch sent out an email this week that said,

Today, Senate Democrats passed a colossal $3.5 trillion budget resolution without a single Republican vote.

I voted NO on Democrats’ $3,500,000,000,000.00 socialist spending spree.

Democrats have laid out their vision for America: they want to transition the United States from a capitalist country to a socialist one. Today, they voted to turn their socialist rhetoric into reality.

Despite soaring inflation and a surging federal deficit, the Democrats will raise taxes and spend Americans’ money to enact their $3.5 trillion far-left wish-list that puts millions more people on the federal dole.

Big Government is not the answer to our problems.

Abandoning the solid capitalist foundation that made the United States the strongest and most successful country in history for the false promises of socialist prosperity is an indefensible mistake.”

Yes Senator Risch it is indefensible! But you were responsible by supporting the initial legislation. You and Senator Crapo will tout your “NO” vote and record when you were totally deceptive with not only this vote but your entire record. This is why we voted for the Constitution Party candidate in the primary and general election last year. We couldn’t hold our nose any longer and vote for any more RINOs. We will vote the same next year unless Mike Crapo has opposition in the primary.

Where is the Freedom Caucus in the House of Representatives? Other than a few people like Chip Roy from Texas there are very few that will stand up for freedom. Will Senator Crapo have a primary challenger next May? We need a choice. The Presidency of Donald Trump united the voters and tore the mask off the deep state and the phony Republicans in Washington.

It is more important than ever that we are engaged in the election of patriots and advocates for freedom for every office from school board to congress. Do the homework and make them accountable. Os Guinness ends his book with a warning and admonition: “So let your choice be made, and let it be known. Remember that free societies are rare and transient, that the American republic is neither ancient nor stable and that its nature as a great experiment may not survive the abandonment of the foundations of its founders. Remember also that the worst choice is always the drifter’s choice: no choice at all.”
