Democratic-Backed Candidates Hiding Their Support From the Party

As part of a homeschool civics class comprised of students in the 7th through 10th grade levels, students were asked to write opinion editorials on topics of their own choosing which reflect current themes in governance and policy-making.  Over the course of the next few weeks the class will be tracking the views of and commentary on their op-eds with the goal of generating as much meaningful community engagement as possible.  A prize will be awarded to the student who is most successful at generating meaningful community engagement with their op-ed. Thanks so much for partnering with us to create this experience for the children and teaching them to be actively involved in the governance of their community!

Democratic-Backed Candidates Hiding Their Support From the Party

The closer we get to the West Bonner County School District (WBCSD) elections, the less time we have to uncover who we should be voting for. Discerning whether candidates are honest is a good place to start. Hailey Scott and Lonnie Orr are two candidates running for zone 4 and zone 2 of the WBCSD. Given our need for honesty in our candidates, it is important to share the truth about who’s backing them.

Hailey Scott is endorsed and supported by the Bonner County Democrats. Yet, when she was asked if she was endorsed or supported by the Bonner County Republicans or the Bonner County Democrats at a Public Forum on October 26th, she claimed that neither supports or endorses her.

However, this solicitation that the Bonner County Democrats emailed to their supporters makes it clear who endorses her and who she gets support from. Ms. Scott’s campaign asked for money and volunteers through the Bonner County Democrats, over a month before she made this denial.

Lonnie Orr also claimed not to be endorsed by the Bonner County Democrats. However, he is on their voter guide, right next to Hailey Scott (even though they misspelled his name). It is unclear whether Lonnie Orr made his denial before or after this voter guide was posted.

As well as Hailey Scott and Lonnie Orr, Gary Suppiger (an LPOSD Zone 2 candidate) has also been less than straightforward about his affiliation with the Bonner County Democrats.

It seems that some candidates don’t want us to know who’s funding and supporting their candidacy. In contrast, other candidates such as Keith Rutledge (WBCSD Zone 4 candidate), Susan Brown (WBCSD Zone 2 candidate), and Jalon Peters (LPOSD Zone 2 candidate) have all publicly acknowledged their support from conservative groups.
